A 39-year-old Argentinian woman in Paraguay, Natalia González, was caught on camera allegedly trying to steal a newborn baby from an Asución hospital.
She, at the time, was dressed up as a nurse, and, allegedly, tried to escape with the baby to a town right at the border with Argentina. González claims that the baby’s father conspired with her. However, the father, Isaias, denies her claims.
The incident took place on Thursday, January 16 at around 1 p.m., according to the Daily Mail.
She entered Barrio Obrero Hospital while disguised as a nurse and then allegedly grabbed the newborn baby girl. Cameras show her abandoning rushing from the scene with the baby allegedly in her arms.
Accompanying the baby at the time was the child’s grandmother, who reportedly spent time with González before the alleged abduction. “I asked my daughter where the baby was and she told me that a nurse had taken her to pediatric,” the grandmother told the local outlet ABC Color. “I told her that she was not a nurse. We ran after the lady because we saw her with the baby in her arms.”
González then took a bus to Mercado 4, a local street market, and reportedly changed her clothes so authorities wouldn’t identify her, according to Infobae. She eventually reached the town of Nanawa, right next to the Argentinian border. It was there that authorities finally apprehended her and retrieved the newborn baby girl.
A Secret Conspiracy
According to González, who was then interviewed in her jail cell, the whole abduction was orchestrated by the girl’s father, Isaias, and an unknown man in Nanawa. González claims that Isaias paid her one million Paraguayan Guaranis (or almost 127 dollars) to abduct the baby. No reason for this alleged coordinated abduction was provided by González.
“He was at the hospital. He came out and told me what time he was going to leave so I could come in,” Gonzálezsaid according to ABC Color. “The grandmother wasn’t there because he kept her busy.” González claims that Isaias provided her with a bus ticket. In turn, she gave him a backpack with her nurse disguise inside. Moreover, González said that the unidentified Nanawa man was with her during her arrest, but he was not arrested.
The 19-year-old Isaias has categorically denied all of González’s claims, calling her a “crazy lady” who is slandering him. In a brief interview with NPY, Isaias personally volunteered to have himself investigated by authorities. “They can seize my phone. I have nothing to hide. That’s why I asked for leave from work and came,” he said.
Dr. Adán Godoy, Barrio Obrero Hospital director, told Hoy that more security measures need to be implemented at the hospital. “It is imperative to implement a strict record of people entering, including not only the personal doctor, but also the patients’ companions, establishing visiting hours and no more than one companion per patient,” Godoy said.
Godoy also said that the hospital believes that Natalia González had previously been scouting the hospital to select a victim. He also said that González may have “psychiatric problems or is part of a trafficking network.”
